Thousands of Britons with dementia are wasting their time and money taking a popular Chinese herbal remedy which new research shows does not improve symptoms.

One in ten people with dementia take Ginkgo biloba after some studies showed it may have a small effect on their symptoms.

But the latest research funded by the Alzheimer’s Society has found it had no signifcant impact on mental function or quality of life and did not prevent the progression of the disease.

Ginkgo is said to improve memory and concentration.
